Who didn’t grow up shopping at Kohl’s?
Kohl’s store was such a staple in my household as a child and has continued to be one for me in adulthood. I recall driving 25 minutes to the closest Kohl’s growing up for back-to-school shopping. My mom would take us to the mall, and park right at Kohl’s.
She’d shop with us for hours with most of the time spent at Kohl’s. My sisters, brother and I would enjoy taking over the store and trying on tons and tons of clothes, taking multiple trips to the fitting room to find the perfect outfit for the first day of school.
Back to school shopping is one of my favorite memories growing up. As an adult, Kohl’s is still one of my favorite stores to shop. Nearly all departments get a peruse when I’m there. You never know where you’ll find the best deals. Primarily I shop for my daughter’s clothes or around the holidays for Christmas gifts for my parents or nieces and nephews.
It’s one of the stores I can reliably shop at and find great deals year-round. Just yesterday I found some clearance Green Back Packer gear for my daughter in 3T and 4T sizes; we live in Illinois so while it’s not easy to find green and gold gear when you do it’s typically on clearance next to full-priced Bears gear.
Discover 10 easy ways to save money at Kohl’s. They are straight forward and easy to remember and execute making it so easy to save while shopping for anything!
1. Level set pricing in your head.
Consider 30% off to be retail price and 50% off or more to be a sale price. If you are interested in something that is 30% off, especially if you don’t have another coupon, WAIT. Don’t purchase it today unless absolutely necessary.
To save money at Kohl’s, only buy items that are on sale today. I assure you it will be on sale for a deeper discount in the near future or a coupon is coming soon. Anything that is true retail price avoid like the plague! Don’t pay full price it’s a trap!
2. Apply for the Kohl’s credit card to take advantage of more deals.
I’m not usually one to sign up for or recommend credit cards. But this one is legit. If you’re a cardholder, you regularly save 30% each month and occasionally receive the coveted 40% off coupon. Plus Kohl’s typically offers free shipping discounts that you can’t take advantage of as a non-cardholder. This credit card is so convenient and truly offers you value, if you don’t have one, get one!
3. Pay off your credit card as mentioned above in the store.
If you have Kohl’s credit card, you have the option of paying the balance off when you’re in the store. Meaning you can receive the benefits by being a cardholder and technically using it, but then turn around and immediately pay off the balance from your checking account.
It’s a great way to stay on budget and keep you from overspending by taking advantage of credit card benefits but paying the card off immediately.
I am guilty of making purchases on plastic and then forgetting about them. It’s so convenient to use credit, and it’s also easy to forget the swipe you just made. Especially if you’re making multiple purchases in a day or out shopping for the day. If you can, pay off the balance immediately and shop guilt-free knowing you took advantage of great savings but also paid the balance right away.
4. Shop during periods where they offer Kohl’s cash.
Frequently during the year, you can earn $10 in Kohl’s Cash for every $50 you spend at the store. Kohl’s cash is treated as cash and money you can use on a future purchase in-store or online. Koh’s Cash is an incredibly easy way to save money at Kohl’s and really stretch your dollars.
Typically around Black Friday, it is common for Kohl’s Cash to be offered at $15.00 per $50.00! That’s amazing! Over this past Memorial Day weekend, they were offering $5 cash on $25.00.
Kohl’s cash is a no-brainer way to stretch your dollars spent at Kohl’s. Be strategic and shop during times they are offering Kohl’s cash. However, a word of caution on returning items that you used to earn Kohl’s Cash, or on orders where you paid using Kohl’s Cash.
Cash may become obsolete if you return an item. It seems inconsistent by store, but I’ve had the cash deducted from my return total. For example, you had $10.00 Kohl’s cash and you used it to purchase a $9.00 dress for your daughter and a $15.00 toy for nephew so you spent $24+.
If you return the $9.00 toddler dress that you paid for using Kohl’s Cash, you may get nothing back for it because they will treat the return as being paid for with the Kohl’s cash that doesn’t have any real cash value.
This is not to scare you, this is just to remind you that sometimes funky things happen at the register when you return something you EARNED cash on or USED cash on. Knowing this I try to purchase things I am very confident I don’t plan to return.
5. Flash your Yes2You rewards at checkout and get a $5 credit for every $100 you spend.
The Yes2You Rewards program is managed separately from Kohl’s cash so you can earn both at the same time. So if Kohl’s is offering $10.00 Kohl’s cash for every $50.00 spent and you spend $100 during that time, you will receive $20.00 Kohl’s cash AND the $5.00 Yes2You rewards.
Tip: Make sure you download the Kohl’s app and scan your Yes2You Rewards ID at checkout. Do this even if you are paying with Kohl’s cash that is linked to your account. Don’t assume because you’ve scanned your Kohl’s cash that the Yes2You rewards were actually scanned. There is a separate screen in the app or you can provide your phone number at check out.
6. Stack coupons for amazing savings.
You are able to use up to 4 coupons in one transaction as long as they aren’t exact duplicates. Stacking coupons makes it easy to save a lot of money at Kohl’s!
How coupons are deducted:
- Kohl’s Cash comes off first
- Department Specific savings ($10 off intimates if you spend $40)
- Percent-off coupons (25% off your order)
- Yes2You Rewards
Tip: Download the Kohls.com app. It is super convenient offering a tab off the main menu called “wallet.” Your wallet includes your Yes2You Rewards, Kohl’s Cash, and any other offers/savings. You can even add any gift cards or in-store credit you have. Whether you’re shopping in-store or online, the wallet is awesome and a great place to keep all your store savings in one place.
7. Use additional tools to ensure more savings.
Rakuten offers cash back on orders if you first stop at Ebates, locate Kohl’s and visit Kohl’s via Rakuten. You can regularly earn 4-10% back or more on your purchases at Kohls.com if you visit Rakuten first.
Paribus tracks your purchases via order confirmations in your email inbox and provides cash back if an item you purchase (from a store they track) drops in price. For example, you purchase an item that was $25.00 today from Kohl’s.
A week later, it is being offered for $20.00. Paribus will work with Kohl’s to credit you back the $5.00 as long as the email address you have linked up to Paribus is the same one that the order confirmation from Kohls.com was delivered to. It’s a great way to have peace of mind that you will get the lowest price possible when purchasing online!
8. Buy discounted gift cards.
My favorite vendor to purchase discounted gift cards from is Gift Card Granny. How it works is you purchase gift cards others’ did not want or need below their stated value using a third party.
Gift cards could include an original gift card, for example, a $50.00 gift card. Or the gift card could be an in-store credit, for example, $27.89 from a return. Check out Gift cards are your new currency to learn more about the power of purchasing cheap gift cards.
When searching for gift cards on Gift Card Granny, you can choose between a new gift card or a used gift card. Also, they are available via e-cards delivered directly to your email intended to be used online. Or physical cards that are mailed to you.
Either way, I have found discounted gift cards to be a great way to save money at Kohl’s, especially on items you were intending to purchase anyway. I regularly see Kohl’s gift cards discounted between 10-15% but could be even higher depending on how urgently the seller wants to get rid of them.
For example, $100 gift cards to Kohl’s may sell for $85.00 or even less! That is a huge savings when combined with promo codes!!
9. Save your receipts for a price adjustment.
Did the price you paid for something a week or two ago just drop to a lower price? Bring your receipt into the store for a price adjustment. Note, many stores offer this, not just Kohl’s. Or use Paribus as mentioned in tip #7 and have the priced tracked for you automatically.
10. Take advantage of the “Kohl’s Drive Through.”
Did you know if you are in-store and logged into Kohl’s WIFI and use their app to get free shipping? I call it the Kohl’s Drive Through because I will literally drive to Kohl’s and park in the closest stall I can find to the physical building.
Sometimes it’s on the side of the building away from the main entrance where no one parks because it’s far from the door. I will connect to WIFI from my CAR (ie, not even get out), place a small order online, and drive away and get on with my day.
I find the Kohl’s Drive Through works perfectly for smaller purchases where you don’t want to ruin a perfectly good deal by paying for shipping. Or on clearance items where there may only be a few left online at an amazing deal but again, you don’t want to ruin your $10.99 purchase by paying $8.95 shipping.
Above is a screenshot I took from the parking lot connected to Kohl’s WIFI using their app; the top says “Get Free Standard Shipping While In This Store.”
If you are in store and don’t have the Kohl’s app you can make a purchase at any of the kiosks inside and get free shipping as well.
There are so many easy ways to save money at Kohl’s. Grab a great deal today using one of these tactics, or, better yet, a combination of these tricks to really save big!
