Imagine if you could make money by simply going about your day as you normally would. No strings attached, just go about your day and earn some cash. That’s what Sweatcoin is. I have to admit; I was a bit skeptical at first. Just what I need, another app to mindlessly occupy my time.
But I’ve been using it for a year now and while it won’t make you rich, it’s a great way to earn incentives for walking outdoors as you would in your regular day-to-day activities anyway. Discover below my Sweatcoin review that dives into the pros and cons of the app, and uncovers if Sweatcoin is a scam. Check it out for yourself.
What is Sweatcoin?
Sweatcoin is an app you can download for free that will pay you to walk outside. As the name suggests, you earn coins for sweating. The outside part is important. The app will track your steps if you have your phone on you at the time you are taking steps, AND if you are walking outside.
So if you work in a warehouse or a hospital or somewhere indoors where you take a lot of steps, but are in a building you won’t benefit by using this app. The steps are only tracked when taken outdoors.
You earn “Sweatcoins” or points for each step you take in a day. The points can then be exchanged for “offers” such as products or discounts off products or credit from select companies.
How do you earn money with Sweatcoin?
You aren’t technically earning cash per se. You earn points that can be exchanged for stuff. All you need to do is to download the SweatCoin app and have your phone on you when you walk outside. The app will automatically track how many steps you are taking. The steps are converted into Sweatcoins that are automatically tracked in your account.
What kinds of offers can I earn with Sweatcoins?
In your app, there are ever-changing offers you can cash your Sweatcoins in for. A section called “offers for today” changes regularly and feature the smaller more achievable prizes. Examples are a free item or using coins to purchase a discount code toward an item.
Sweatcoin also offers “Marathon offers” that will take a lot longer to achieve but if you are in for the long haul you can work toward. An example of a marathon offer is $1,000 cash or a free iPhone XS. Both of these offers cost 20,000 Sweatcoins.
How many steps will it take to earn 1 Sweatcoin?
Sweatcoin states that “1,000 verified steps convert to 1 Sweatcoin, minus a small 5% commission.” If I look at my numbers above, 515,000 steps in the last year minus a 5% conversion does equal the 489 Sweatcoins I have in my account, so the math is accurate in my case.
How long will it take to earn 20,000 Sweatcoins?
There are pretty cool prizes you can cash in on once you’ve earned 20,000 Sweatcoins. But how long will it take to get there?
To put your earning potential into perspective, I have been using the Sweatcoin app for just about a year. I live in the Midwest and we just came off Winter. So I haven’t been walking outside much for the last 4-5 months, but am pretty active otherwise. That said I forget to bring my phone with me a lot when my husband, daughter, dog and I go for our evening walks.
So I’d say I‘m an average to above average outside walker.
So in 1 year, I’ve converted 515,000 steps into a total of 489 Sweatcoins. So at this rate, one of the marathon offers would take me another 39 years. I’m not sharing this to discourage you, especially since you don’t have to do anything other than simply download the app to earn. But wanted to put into perspective what it would take to really make money or cash in on significant offers with this app.
Is Sweatcoin a scam?
In my experience, no it is not a scam. I walk outside, I earn points, I can cash in said points. There doesn’t appear to be anything scammy about the app that I’ve seen so far.
Below is an example of how many coins I have earned recently by day. The app and how they track your steps is not perfect. Some days I feel like I’ve walked more outside but earned less than other days. I also have the “Battery Saver Mode” on. This is an option located within the app to help preserve battery as the app GPS is constantly on trying to figure out if you are outside or inside. Due to having this feature on, the app tells me that some steps may not get tracked in an effort to save my battery life.
Is Sweatcoin free?
Yes, it is completely free. You do not pay to use it and don’t have to use a credit card to sign up. So you walk, and earn coins to exchange for free stuff!
How much money can you make with Sweatcoin?
This app is not a get rich quick deal, that’s for sure. If you’re active and spend time outside, it might be to your benefit to download the app. It’s a way to passively earn some money for doing activities you were likely going to do anyway.
In the year I’ve been using the app, I’ve earned 489 Sweatcoins. That is enough to cash in on some of the smaller offers that change regularly.
Can I cash out my Sweatcoins for cash?
NO, it is not possible to cash out Sweatcoins for cash money. There is no option to cash out via a bank transfer or via PayPal. You’re not technically earning cash; you’re earning points you can exchange for offers. The offers change daily. So check back if there isn’t something you’re interested in today, as at least one new offer will be posted tomorrow.
How can I earn Sweatcoins faster?
You can earn Sweatcoins faster by changing your Membership Level.
There are 4 Membership levels available on the app. The first is free, the others you use Sweatcoins to “pay” for.
Sweatcoin Membership Levels:
- Mover – The free version allows you to earn up to 150 Sweatcoins per month (5 per day).
- Shaker – Will cost you 4.75 Sweatcoins per month, and you can earn up to 10 Sweatcoins per day (300 per month). Twice the free Mover level which allows you to earn twice as fast!
- Quaker – Will cost you 20 Sweatcoins per month, and you can earn up to 15 Sweatcoins per day (450 per month)
- Breaker – Costs you 30 Sweatcoins per month, but you can earn up to 20 SweatCoins per day (600 per month)
Mover is free and what you’re automatically enrolled in. The upgrades to Shaker, Quaker, or Breaker, don’t cost you money but you’ll pay in Sweatcoins. The benefit is that you can earn faster. For example, you can upgrade to “Shaker” status which will cost you 4.75 Sweatcoins per month.
This upgrade allows you to earn up to 10 Sweatcoins per day (vs. the Mover at 5 Sweatcoins per day). Thus if you got really into this app, and spend a lot of time on our feed outside, you could earn coins even faster.
Also note that each level has monthly maximums, but not in aggregate. If you have an incredibly high number of steps one day, there is a maximum you can earn each day. So steady consistent walking is best.
Can you hack or cheat the Sweatcoin app?
I honestly have no idea. I see there are some YouTube videos out there that claim you can. I have not watched them and wouldn’t recommend it. The Sweatcoin app is intended to reward you for staying active outside. Take it as a nice benefit for stepping outside. I would not recommend trying to hack or cheat the Sweatcoin app to earn points faster.
Earn Sweatcoins faster with Daily Rewards
Another way to earn coins faster is through Daily rewards. You can earn 1 Sweatcoin each day by watching an advertisement. I personally haven’t been doing this as I keep the app on in the background and that’s about it.
But if you are into it, and want to earn at least 1 Sweatcoin per day, that’s 365 per year by watching a short video, it’s an easy way to earn faster! So simply watch a video, and earn 1 SweatCoin. So Theoretically you can earn Sweatcoins every day and never step foot outside.
A new feature I don’t recall a year ago when I first downloaded the app is the “Daily Bonus.” I just watched a video right now to earn 1 bonus SweatCoin. The video was for a gaming app and the end I was asked to download it which I declined.
I then see that I earned 1 Sweatcoin for today. But I also see that if I come back tomorrow, I can earn double points. So I can earn 2 Sweatcoins if I come back tomorrow and watch another video. I’m tempted to do it! Not only will I earn faster, but didn’t have to take steps to do it.
- Earn “Sweatcoins” you can exchange for prizes
- Simple to use; in fact, you don’t’ really even need to “use” it, just download and forget it.
- May inadvertently or subconsciously get you to move more – never a bad thing
- It’s passive earning meaning you actually don’t have to do anything outside the norm to simply earn points.
- Points don’t expire. So earn at your own pace, and cash in when you’re ready.
- Slow to earn. It takes a long time to step into any rewards that are overly substantial.
- Maximum points per day. There are only so many coins you can earn in a day.
- May drain your battery. I currently have the app set to low battery mode. Meaning I’m willing to sacrifice steps for keeping more of my battery.
- Not all steps are always counted. If you work in a city or are hiking, tall buildings or trees may impact the GPS signal and the number of steps that are counted. Sweatcoin states that their algorithm verifies “about 65% of our users’ total steps on average.” So even if not blocked by GPS and feeling like you’re doing everything “right” not all of your steps may be counted.
- Only tracks steps taken outside. Great if you have an active job and work outside anyway. Kind of a bummer if you have an active job and take many steps but work indoors.
Is Sweatcoin worth it?
You really have nothing to lose. You can download the app, literally forget about it, and earn steps you can cash in for points. In fact, since it takes so darn long to accumulate points you can actually do anything with, that’s what I recommend. Set it up, and forget about it. Check in on it periodically, look your points and offers. Cash in on small prizes as it strikes your fancy.
